Music & Songleading by Mary, Larry, Jalisa & Me
This quad has accumulated over 80 years of “Song Leading” experience for youth camps, classroom education, gospel singing, folk music, Rec Labs, and other programs (both accompanied and a cappella). Whether for a 4-H or Girl Scout Camp, church, or other community group, we will try to tailor the class to meet your needs, build your repertoire and your song leading skills. Come prepared for a great time! Class facilitators: Larry Hall, OSU Extension Educator; Mary Driskell, Elementary School Teacher; Jalisa Johnson, Program Director of Camp Newaygo; and “Me” Bill Henderson, OSU Associate Professor “Emeritus” Cost: $-0- Class limit: The more the merrier!
Teamwork & Teamplay – A 2nd Helping
Author Jim Cain shares his favorite, newest and best team and community building activities from around the world, including some activities that need no props at all. This will be the same class as the morning session.
Primitive Tools for Life
Chuck Wurth & Sarah Wensink will help you craft simple recreational “shooting sports” equipment for the adventurous spirit in pursuit of the target of desire. Make a simple bow and arrow, atlatl and dart along with a stone sling. Hand tool usage, basic sanding, scraping and gluing skills needed. Cost ?? Class Limit of 12.
Program Planning
Come and learn how to use your skills to run the best program possible. Whatever program you may be running (4-H classes, camp craft, evening wide game, initiatives sessions) the planning and implementation is something that can determine the success of that program. From timing, to planning, brainstorming and even what to do when things go awry, this session will be focused towards ways to help you meet and exceed your programming goals. Come with ideas, thoughts, questions and even stories from the past and Neva Baltzell & Meaghan Wheeler will give you some tips and tricks to succeed!
Creative Dramatics
Come one, come all, and step right up to this hands-on, practical theatre arts experience! Covering the basics of acting and improv, the art of puppetry, the steps and songs of musical theatre, and even the creation and performance of your own skits and shorts, this class will guide you, and train you to guide others, through the fantastic world of creative performance! Participants will learn to work together on a performance, develop as individual performers and instructors, and create a skit or short of their own. Come play with Sarah Whitfield, Karen Saker & Ted Zech. Class limit: 20
American Flag Quilts
She's a grand old flag and in this class you will make a quilted one using the bargello technique. You can choose from a large (about 28 x 40 inches), medium (about 15 x 18) or small (about 12 x 15). This is an easy class aimed at beginner and experienced quilters alike. After the top is pieced, you will machine quilt the finished product (choice of two methods) and put on the binding and a hanging sleeve. Depending on proficiency, the participants can make additional flag quilts, if desired! Come sew with Edith Dyke & David Kalkbrenner.
Wacky Sports
Come learn and experience first-hand some sports that are not your traditional backyard sports! This class will add a twist to some old sports and create new ones for you to enjoy. A variety of wide games will be taught that can be played with very large groups. These can be used in a variety of settings. Craig Muhlenkamp & Isaac Leeds will be your “Wacky Coaches”.
Mini Sessions
We are offering mini sessions again this year. A “Mini Session” is an interesting class that does not need 8 hours of instruction, but fits in 4 hours nicely! You must choose one mini session from each period of two days – two mini sessions in all.
Thursday/Friday Mini Sessions
Leather Craft
Participants will learn how to produce two different and very useful leather projects that promote a strong sense of accomplishment, within the restrictions of most budgetary constraints! Decorate, assemble and finish a leather waist belt, as well as a unique leather belt buckle that will be the envy of anyone who did NOT participate! There is a limit of 50 participants, and the cost is $10 per person. Learn from Tandy Leather’s own Scott Curtis.
Photography
In this session we will be learning about photography as a way to capture images but also as an art form. Taking pictures whether your camera is brand new, or an antique is the same basic idea. While in class we will be learning fun ways to take pictures with a few different styles of cameras. You will also learn many tips and techniques to make your pictures more appealing. We will be taking pictures throughout BLW to practice our skills, so come play and learn with Ted Zech.
Rainy Day Games
Don't like the rain? Why not? Rainy days at camp or in any recreation program are a great opportunity to introduce new and interesting programs that would get kids and participants excited. Come join Joe Richards as he gives ideas and activities to turn rainy days into the most anticipated event of the summer!
Saturday/Sunday Mini Sessions
Spherical Games
In this mini-session you will learn many games that can be played with a beach ball. Activities will vary in type and include: relays, large group games, team games and activities that can be used in teambuilding settings. Beach balls are great tools for all recreation programs as they are cheap, easy to store, easy to carry and people associate them with fun. So come learn what you can do with a beach ball. Taught by one of our “Games Masters” Tim Borton.
Head Scratchin’ Puzzlers & Challengers
Build a portable collection of simple games & puzzles: Great for small groups or family gatherings. All tools and supplies furnished. Build with Bill Henderson. Cost: $10.00 Class Limit: 12
Good Gabbing
Learn some great tips, tricks, games and game adaptations for facilitators to use to get youth, teams and organizations processing an issue, event or experience in order to maximize your group’s learning. Katie Feldhues will share some quick and easy debriefing tactics to draw out root issues, learning gaps, program weaknesses and life lessons.
