All About Buckeye Leadership Workshop
Buckeye Leadership Workshop is a learning, sharing “workshop” intended as a balanced program of social, physical, mental, and spiritual activities. In a positive and supportive atmosphere, workshoppers are encouraged and empowered to experiment with new activities, develop new abilities, discover new interests, expand their creativity, practice and master new leadership skills, share ideas and personal skills, establish new friendships, and develop networks of human resources.
We believe that Buckeye Leadership Workshop provides a powerful learning environment in which anyone who works with people, professionally or informally, can develop programming for youth or adults. The workshop also benefits those who simply enjoy associating with great people, experiencing new ideas, and learning new skills.
Experiential learning through recreation is truly the intent and methodology of Buckeye Leadership Workshop. We expect that participants in Buckeye Leadership Workshop will leave the workshop physically tired, mentally refreshed, excited about their personal skills and abilities, and equipped with many new ideas to share back home.
Who Can Attend?
Buckeye Leadership Workshop welcomes those interested in developing or improving recreational leadership skills, regardless of race, color, gender, place of residence, national origin, or economic situation. A minimum age of 15 (or a freshmen in high school) is required. Full-time participation from Wednesday evening until Sunday afternoon is required. If you cannot join us for the entire workshop, please wait until another year to send your application. The rationale is that this is an extremely interactive workshop and your temporary absence not only affects you, but has a subsequent affect on those in your sessions, think together groups and evening programs. Substitutes for workshop will not be accepted and will be sent home at their own expense.
Where Is BLW Held?
Buckeye Leadership Workshop will be held at Recreation Unlimited. Recreation Unlimited is a year-round, fully-accessible camp, sports and educational complex for individuals with disabilities. This camping site offers beautiful natural surroundings and state-of-the-art recreational facilities. Workshoppers stay in heated dormitories and take advantage of spacious workshop areas, dining hall, lodge and paved walking trails. Recreation Unlimited is located about 30 miles north of Columbus, OH at 7700 Piper Rd, Ashley, OH 43003-9741. Write or call (740) 548-7006 for additional information or site location.
Who Plans This Workshop?
Each year, an elected committee of youth and adult volunteers plans BLW. The committee is made up of a Permanant Committee of six (6) members, four (4) Youth/Young Adult members (16-21 years old) who serve a one year term and nine (9) adult members (over 21) who serve a three year term. Additionally, because of the 4-H influence and association with The Ohio State University, there is an Ohio 4-H Representative who serves an indefinite term. Each year, three adult members, two youth/young adult members are elected by popular vote of the entire workshop membership - everyone who attends Buckeye. See the "committee page" for more information.
